Understanding Import Duties and Fees

Learn what import charges mean, why they apply and how to pay or dispute them.

Understanding U.S. Import Fees

International shipments entering the United States may incur duties, applicable taxes and other import-related charges.
Understanding these charges can help you prepare for delivery.

What Are Import Fees?

Import-related charges can include government duties, taxes and processing fees.

Customs duties depend on factors such as the goods’ classification under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), customs value and country of origin. Accurate product descriptions, values and HTS codes help ensure charges are assessed correctly.

What Are Tariffs and How Do They Work?

A tariff is a customs duty imposed on imported goods. Some goods may be subject to additional tariffs beyond their standard duty rate. The applicable charges depend on the product, its country of origin and the rules in effect when it enters the United States.

Why Is UPS Billing Me for Import Charges?

UPS may pay government charges on your behalf to help your shipment clear customs, then bill those amounts to the responsible party.

How Do I Pay Import Charges?

Track your package on UPS.com. If payment is required and a “Pay Now” link appears, follow it to review the charges and available payment options.

How Do I Dispute a Duty or Tax Charge?

If you believe duties or taxes were calculated incorrectly, contact UPS Billing using the phone number on your invoice or email the UPS Post Entry Department at usspdutydiscrepancyreview@ups.com.

To help explain the issue, have your tracking number, invoice and supporting purchase or shipment documents ready,
along with a description of the charge you believe is incorrect.
